It’s Terrific Tuesday, AND Spring Break, AND Darling Hotbuns’ Gaming Geek night, so this means Mini Maven & I have the joint all to ourselves! We’re thinking about baking some cupcakes. ::slaver:: As many of you may have surmised, I’m a fan of red velvet ANYTHING. If given the chance, I bake things that are red velvet more often times than not. And the sinister truth is that I am actually gluten free — I have what is called Celiac Disease, which is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats. Therefore, I either have to bake gluten free delicious desserts that can be quite contrary with each recipe –OR–  I can just bake like (I think I am) Paul Hollywood and go berserk on that egg beater. Pa-POW! I *wub* to bake, so much so that most of the time I just bake for my loved ones and get my jollies out of smelling up the house something sweet for my sweets. ::smile:: I always tell Mini Maven, “I love you more than the whole cosmos with icing, sprinkles, and a cherry on top!” She should know it, because gosh beaver dam it if it’s not hard to lick the spoon of pain!

These 1D cupcakes I made for Mini Maven's birthday this year are about as creative as I have tried to get. So, you can see the level of skill I am starting out with. May the force be with me (and our fire extinguisher)...

When I first met DH, I baked him treats all of the time — cookies, brownies, and mostly truffles. I did that until he told me I was fattening him up and interfering with his Arnold workout. ::snicker::  (It’s not a tumor. It’s a mass of truffle!) I enjoy baking so much, but I am not fancy. I’ve never worked with fondant or been too overly courageous with my decorating. Since I am of the creative sort, I want to get fun & fancy! Now that we’re moving into this new house with such a glorious, open kitchen (with more counter space than outer space), I am looking forward to giving it a whirl!

In recent years, cupcakes have exploded as the new hot thing! They’ve begun to take over the birthday & wedding cake, even! Cupcake bakeries are popping up all over, and I never dreamt their popularity would hold out this long, but the industry is growing by the measuring cup. I can’t get over what people do with cupcakes nowadays! They come out of the box too pretty and detailed to eat. I am constantly astounded by the skill that goes into topping off cupcakes. With the artistic ability they put into just one, it’s no wonder that a business can thrive because it seems too cheap to charge $5 for just one. Truly amazing little mouthfuls of masterpiece. #awestruck  It’s a bit intimidating, but I like a challenge. Plus, I want an excuse to buy these far-too-stupidly-cute oven cupcake boxes to hand deliver them in! #crush

I won’t be able to go from traditional cupcakes (with merely a dollop of cream cheese icing and shimmery sugar crystals) to anything you’d see on Cupcake Wars, but ya gotta start somewhere! So here are some references I have found that I’d like to give a go when my inner Betty Crocker comes out to play:

I found these totally tubular '80s-themed retro cupcakes on 2 time winners & Food Network champions, Rebecca & Christy's, blog for Suite 106 Cupcakery. These would NOT gag me with a spoon!

I found these retro "Housewife Cupcake Toppers" through Retro Ruth. I've been somewhat stalking her Etsy store, No Pattern Required (Mid-Century Every Day), while planning our wedding party. Retro Ruth actually made these particular toppers for a wedding. Aren't they just swell?!

I found this Instagram photo via the Cupcake Mistress' Tumbler page. They are just your traditional cupcake, but they combine two of my favorite fashion details: bows & cherries! ~ vcchace.tumblr.com

These just make me giddy & gleeful! Normally Jupiter is my favorite planet, but I am so impressed with these petite, edible Earths that that's the one I would pick to eat (first). ;) I found this photo via Magnolia Cakes, but the description left little to be desired ~ it simply said: Cupcakes 3D-Space. Hrmpf, well, they are out of this world, if you ask me!

As much as I am 'over the moon' about the aforementioned/aforephotographed space cupcakes from Magnolia, these retro space cakes are probably more my amateur speed. These were made by hello-naomi (Flickr). I first read about them on Cupcake Takes the Cake blogspot. I love the muted, minimalist design they're rocketin'!

Now these little beauties are probably where I should start. I tend to 'bite off more than I can chew' when just starting to try new things. These look feasible! I nabbed this photo reference by way of Building a Bakery's blogspot. Owner, Kari Haskell, owns Retro Bakery in Las Vegas, NV.

Of course, I *want* to be making these vintage tattoo wedding cupcakes! That's just ridiculous, though... NO ONE can compare to Nicola Shipley who makes artistic, unique designs — from retro tattoo cakes to funky cupcakes and sculpted novelty cakes! Her brand is called Fairy Cakes & Faces. Brilliant. Almost too cool to eat.

As the same with these! I would like one edible one & one ceramic one to display on the windowsill in my kitchen. ::grin:: I couldn't find much information about these divinely delectable little cupcakes, only that they were submitted on vuduloja.com under: Moda Retrô, Rockabilly & Tattoo. I'd submit them under: YUM!

And THIS is what you call Angelika Frangelico proof (and I don't mean the martini)! These are just edible images that are printed on high quality frosting sheets with premium edible ink. Depending on where you purchase them from, the images are typically FDA approved, Gluten Free and Kosher. This is the case with these particular custom image designs by Edible Design Images. Making baking easy as Sunday morning, dollfaces!
